Great story from the San Antonio Express News:
San Antonio’s two airports had an overall economic impact of $5.1 billion last year, officials said Wednesday.
Just counting the direct spending at San Antonio International and Stinson Municipal airports, the impact approached $1.1 billion, according to a new economic impact study.
Aviation Director Frank Miller said the total was larger than he expected, and Mayor Julián Castro said he was pleased with the report, the first assessment of the airports’ economic clout in 17 years.
“It’s a strong reminder of the importance of the investments we make in our airport,” Castro said.
The report, prepared by GRA Inc., said the impact includes 6,053 jobs at the airports themselves and 98,676 jobs when all the companies that support the airport or that benefit from spending at the airport are counted. The wages paid to those employees total almost $1.6 billion.
“Our airports are central to the vitality of San Antonio’s economy,” Miller said in a news release. “In addition to jobs, the airports are generators for commerce and trade. Last year, 270 million pounds of freight cargo and more than 8 million passengers moved through our airports, supporting additional economic activity in the region.”
