The Culture of Business
The City of San Antonio’s Economic Development Department announced today that Hangar 9, LLC; a subsidiary of Vanguard Health Systems, Inc., (Vanguard) will create 85 new high-wage information technology (IT) jobs and retain 40 IT jobs in San Antonio. Vanguard is consolidating their IT service center operations and will locate these 125 IT jobs at the Cypress Tower in downtown San Antonio.
“We are excited Vanguard selected San Antonio for the consolidation and expansion of its IT service center operations,” said Mayor Julián Castro. “These high-wage jobs support a growing SA2020 Information Technology Industry and complement other IT operations, such as Geekdom and Sigma Solutions that are thriving in our Center City area.”
Vanguard is headquartered in Nashville, TN and operates 28 hospitals in six states, employing more than 41,000. In San Antonio, Vanguard operates five Baptist hospitals and currently employs approximately 7,200. Vanguard’s IT service center consolidation will provide IT services and business process support for Vanguard’s hospitals and will provide Vanguard an opportunity to grow and offer IT services to other San Antonio area hospitals.
According to Scott Blanchette, Vanguard’s Chief Information Officer and President of Hangar 9 Solutions, the company chose to consolidate operations here for several reasons. “Quite simply, we are bullish on San Antonio. It’s been a very favorable environment to expand our Baptist Health System of hospitals, and we like the emerging technology sector and the military’s strong presence. It’s the perfect place to grow a healthcare focused technology services company.”
Vanguard is locating in the Inner City Reinvestment/Infill Policy (ICRIP) zone, and made a concerted effort to locate in the urban core in order to support the City’s focus on downtown revitalization efforts.
“This project provides another example of the success of the City’s business retention and expansion efforts,” said City Manager Sheryl Sculley. “Through the City’s grant incentive of $625,000, we are retaining 40 IT jobs and adding 85 new IT jobs that will pay an average annual salary of more than $60,000 in a targeted industry.”
In San Antonio, Vanguard Health System owns and operates Mission Trail Baptist Hospital, Baptist Medical Center, Northeast Baptist Hospital, North Central Baptist Hospital, and St. Luke’s Baptist Hospital. Vanguard recently broke ground on Resolute Health, a new hospital in New Braunfels, and acquired Valley Baptist Hospital in the Rio Grande Valley. Additionally, the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio just announced their decision to partner with Vanguard and The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia to build a world-class children’s hospital in the Medical Center with an ambulatory care network across the city and into South Texas.
